ABOUT THE CONCERT

A meditative passion

Dietrich Buxtehude’s (1637-1707) Membra Jesu Nostri i a collection of seven cantatas, based upon a medieval Latin poem from the early 1200’s, probably by Arnulf Von Löwen. The poem’s title is Salve Mundi Salutare – ’Hail thee, saviour of the world’. The poem is a kind of meditative observation of Jesus upon the cross, where the gaze moves from the feet, up to the knees, the hands, the side, the breast, the heart the face. These seven ‘gazes’ form seven sections in the poem. Membra Jesu Nostri is one of Buxtehude’s greatest works. He rarely composed music with Latin text, mostly preferring the German. Membra is thus Buxtehude’s greatest work in Latin.
