ABOUT THE CONCERT

The program includes two solo concertos by Haydn: The trumpet concerto, played by Justin Bland, and piano concerto nr. 11, played by Gilbert Martinez. The concert ends with Beethoven’s 1st symphony.

Both soloists are regular members of Copenhagen Soloists. Bland plays on a keyed-trumpet, an instrument that appeared around the time of Haydn’s composition-date – until then, the trumpet was an instrument without valves. Martinez plays on a fortepiano from 1790.

Beethoven’s 1st symphony contains all the characteristics that Beethoven is known for – rhythmic and harmonic surprise, brilliance, lyricism and drama. The early symphony is both mature and light.

Copenhagen Soloists have performed Beethoven’s 5th and 7th symphonies in the ‘Beethoven year’ 2020. It was the first time in newer times that these works were performed on period instruments by a Danish orchestra, and this will also be the case here.
