ABOUT THE CONCERT

Beethoven’s Missa Solemnis is one of the greatest ecclesiastical vocal works of all times. It is a work that demands strong forces all-around, a work which seems to span over time and space, incorporating compositional techniques from both baroque and renaissance, as well as present political currency through symbolism of war and peace. It is a late Beethoven work which was composed around the time of the 9th symphony, a time in which Beethoven was as if seeking to embrace the world despite its faults and troubles. The work is so challenging for both choir, soloists as well as orchestra, that it is relatively rarely performed. Copenhagen Soloists undertake this colossal task with a choir of just 20 soloist singers, who share the choir and solo parts, as is the ensemble’s tradition. The orchestra plays as usual on period instruments.
